here i had the joy of art directing and designing the first issue of bog magazine. bog magazine is a fresh quarterly publication which celebrates the visionaries and innovators who pioneer the science fiction and fantasy genre. from an extraterrestrial escapade computer game (featuring a space- gnome) to an archetypal, cult classic comic strip set in a dystopian new york; bog issue unturns the strangest of stones, meticulously dissecting the creative thought processes of some remarkable artists.
the magazine is all about celebrating the creativity and innovation of artists working in the science fiction and fantasy genre. i wanted to reflect this same spirit of eclecticism and energy in the design of the magazine itself.
the issue can be read from either side and the bog masthead is an ambigram. this design choice lends itself to the sci-fi genre and the concept of space, no up or down, front or back, just a continuous and fluid experience of the content.
read from one side the magazine is a series of articles spotlighting inspiring sci-fi artists, and from the other side a sample of sci-fi or fantasy fiction. usually, the fiction takes the form of a graphic novel since this lends itself to the magazine’s images focused aesthetic.
the bog website begins with a sci-fi infused animation which is as explosive as some of the magazine spreads.
